Finding Company/Industry Information for Your Job Search
Industry Codes
Industry Codes are 4 or 6 digit codes which describe what a company makes (manufactures) or services that it offers. Most companies have a primary industry code and one or more secondary codes. Knowing a primary code allows us to put together lists of comparable companies in an industry for our job search. We can often further limit these geographically.
Many of the business databases allow one to search by NAICS/SIC codes to find news about an industry and to compile lists of companies in that industry which can then be limited by net sales and geographically.
- Standard Industrial Classification Codes (S.I.C.)2-4 digit codes searchable by number or keyword(s).
- NAICS (North American Industrial Classification System)
Note: Contains industry information that can be found using a 6-digit numbering system. Searching with the 6-digit code generates a list of companies in an industry.
