Accessibility Resources for Library Users
File Formats
Many of the library's databases present articles in PDF or HTML formats. HTML articles may be read aloud by software very easily. PDF accessibility depends on how the articles were scanned. In some cases, security features (to prevent the document from being altered) may interfere with a PDFs accessibility. As noted on the Database Accessibility page, some vendors will reformat PDFs on request.
Browser Extensions and Other Tools
There are several tools and browser extensions that can provide text-to-speech services.
- OrbitDocOrbitDoc from Texthelp is a free Chrome extension that allows users to read PDFs within the Chrome browser. Some premium features of the tool require a subscription.
- Natural Reader Online ReaderNatural Reader Online Reader allows users to paste text or upload files in a variety of formats to have them read out loud. Premium features require a subscription.
- Natural Reader Chrome ExtensionNatural Reader has a free Chrome extension that will read text from any website including Google Docs.
Microsoft Office 365
Many Microsoft Apps now include an Immersive Reader, also known as Read Aloud in some apps.
