In dictionary terms, a referral is an act of referring someone for consultation, review, or further action  

That is exactly what you are doing when you refer a library user to one of the subject librarians

Do not respond to questions at the circulation desk with "No" or "I don't know"

Please consider these responses instead:

• "That's a great question, let me see if I can find someone who can help"
• "A librarian in their office across the way may be able to sit down with you and show you the answer to your question"
