Reclassification Project

Mitigate harm on our LGBTQ patrons by addressing LC classification of LGBTQ topics under “sexual deviance.”

Reclassification

  • Environmental scan (Done 2023 09 07).
  • Discussion with Laura Daniels at Cornell. (Done 2023 09 15).
  • Pull report and analyze. (Done 2023 09 15).
  • Ask subject specialists to review and weed HQ (Done 2023 10 10)
  • Consider marketing retrieval service for impacted patrons. Discussion with Ben Hogben and Virgilio Pinto. (Done ca 2023 09 18)
  • Consider signage at HQ. Discussion with Ron Gilmour. (Done 2023 09 26)
  • Consultation with Director of the Center for LGBT Education, Outreach, & Services for input from affected folks (Done 2023 10 23)
  • As per Director Dalfonzo, consider shifting/adding to our focus on reclassification to include lobbying the Library of Congress about changing their classification system.
  • Subject specialist review complete (Done 2024 01 08)
  • Re-research classification headings for updates (Done 2024 01 10)
  • Further research reveals that Library of Congress now classifies LGBTQIA+ subjects under “Sexual Activity” – adjacent to “Sexual practices outside the norm” (no longer “Sexual deviance”) and not subordinate to it. We see no harm in this arrangement. (Done 2024 01 11)
  • Weeding complete (Done 2024 01 12)
  • New report reviewed; no remaining problematic titles. Project complete! (2024 02 08)
